I checked out the new Hulk movie this weekend and since no one’s posted a review/opinion yet, I guess it falls to me. It’s no Iron Man, but if you’re a fan of the TV series, you shouldn’t miss it. If you want a bit more spoilerriffic review hit the jump for more.

First off I should proabably disclose my position on the Ang Lee version. I thought it was horrible. The story was horrible, the cgi was horrible, the script was horrible. I thought the acting was good, within the constraints of the script, and I really liked the comic book style cuts and edits.

With that out of the way, I can say that the new movie is better in all ways than the Ang Lee movie, but it’s still not jaw dropping, or amazing. The thing is, this isn’t an issue with anything other than The Hulk himself. The classical Hulk is not a strong character. The set up is outstanding, but for him to be what he is, you can’t feel bad for Hulk when he screws up or makes mistakes, since there’s no decision going on there, it’s all instinct. You feel bad for Banner, sure, but he’s not the super hero, he’s a scientist, and depending on what era you’re talking about, he’s not entirely likeable himself. It’s obvious that there’s a certain level of understanding on the part of the filmmakers that there are issues with how very opposite the two sides of Bruce Banner are, and that steps have been taken to bring both sides back toward the center in subtle ways, allowing the audience to feel for these characters.

Overall the casting is excellent, and there are a lot of outstanding cameos to be on the lookout for. The script isn’t as touchy feely as the last one, and while the hulk is a bit more humanized, he’s still the “raging ball of emotions” that Stan Lee originally envisioned, if a bit less homo-erotic (don’t worry, he’s still plenty eroticized).

If you like comic book movies, The Hulk specifically, and/or want to keep abreast of the leadup to the Avengers movie, this one is not to be missed.

Man, I’ve got to say that the viral campaign for Dark Knight has been totally awesome. The latest site, http://www.gothamcitypizzeria.com/ is really outstanding, especially if you click on the “HA” in GOTHAM. I can’t wait to see this movie.

I don’t think I’ve seen this level of immersion in media outside of the Grand Theft Auto games and the “Internet” in the game. The beautiful part of it is that while there is a ton of stuff out there, none of it is over the top, and very little of it is being pushed down people’s throats, almost as if Gotham is a real place, with a real online presence.

The trailer for the new Incredible Hulk movie is up over at mtv.com and it looks like Edward Norton was an excellent choice. I liked the Ang Lee movie, but I completely understand that people hated it. The Hulk is, after all a giant psychopath, giving him a “soul” was a pretty big mistake stylistically. If Thor was the only one of the Avengers who could ever keep him in check that might tell you something. If rumors about them approaching the subject from the perspective of the TV show are true I’m all for it. I haven’t read Hulk in years, but as he was originally designed he’s terribly one dimensional. I imagine the conversation leading up to his creation was pretty awesome though. Click through for my take on it.

Stan Lee: You know what we need Ditko? A hero who is literally a raging ball of emotions with gigantic, shapely thighs?
Jack Kirby: Hmmm, you might be on to something Stan, but maybe we should downplay the thighs and focus on the character, that’s your ballgame anyway right?
Stan Lee: Well I suppose we can highlight his inner conflict, but I really think that his massive thighs highlight his inner conflict in such a stately manner. I mean, how can you really accept the whole improbability of it without the shapely, well-formed thighs to tie the character to reality?
Jack Kirby: Ok, boss *sigh*

Yeah, that seems about right, at least if you go back and look at the early stuff. I think that if they can pull of the ‘humanity’ of Bruce Banner while showing the sheer power of the hulk it should be an okay movie, but I don’t envy them their task.

Lastly, if you stick around on the Mtv site after the hulk trailer it will kick into the trailer for Lost Boys The Tribe. As far as vaguely homosexual vampire movies go, Cory Feldman is far superior to Tom Cruise. Honestly I’m not sure if I’m more excited for the new Lost Boys or the new Hulk.
