Hexed 01-02 Review
It’s no secret that a good amount of my exposure to comics has been through movies and TV. That’s how I came to hear of Boom! Studios – they’re producing a series based on the show Eureka and apparently have an series based on Farscape that I need to check out. More importantly, they are releasing their new miniseries, Hexed, free via MySpace comics (as embedded images and a downloadable CBZ files).
The series introduces us to Lucifer, a thief of hard to find supernatural objects. The first issue does a good job of setting up the story, while introducing us to Lucifer’s friends and enemies. There’s no time or space wasted introducing us to a world that anyone who has watched TV in the last decade would be quite familiar with. The second issue delves a little deeper and shows us a little more about the players in the series and their relationships to one another. I like that Lucifer hasn’t been proclaimed the-most-important-person-in-the-universe, but is more of a low key player in a larger world, but it’s still early days and it quite possible that we just haven’t been told yet. The series has been described as Buffy meets Hellblazer. It’s an easy description, but not one that I think gives the series much justice. The art is much brighter than Buffy Season 8 and is quite refreshing, at least to me, being used to the Buffy and RDM BSG colour palates. Also, it’s hard to see John Constantine in a situation quite like Luci’s and there’s no Scooby Gang to help her out.
I do have an issue with the fact that while a lot has happened in the first two issues, the story doesn’t seem to have progressed very much. This might well be a mini-series introduction to a longer running series should it be successful, but I wonder how the story might reach a climax, much less a satisfying conclusion. Still, what I’ve read so far has been quite good, if slightly cliched. There are worse crimes when you’re giving away a series for free.

Dude, Ish, I am pretty pumped about this. BOOM! has done a couple books I really liked, and I keep meaning to get more into their free comics (something they’ve been doing a lot of lately).
This looks really good, and I’m downloading the CBZs right now.
Yeah, I’m pretty impressed with the titles so far. My introduction to Boom came via the news that they were releasing comics based in the Eureka universe. I should look into some of the other stuff that they’re releasing for free. Any that you’d recommend?
