DMZ 29, Lone Ranger & Tonto 1, Punisher 55
Rounding out a relatively good week in comics for me were 3 excellent titles.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto one-shot was a well written short story that in many ways, encapsulated the first 10 issues of the series. It gave the reader a great idea of what each of the two titled cast members was really all about, added some character depth, and kept the pace of the story flowing.
The Punisher continues to impress. We learn a bit more about why Barracuda was hunting for him, and it sets up the new arc really well, leaving the reader excited for more. Thats the best you can expect from the first issue of an arc. Not to mention, Nick Fury makes an appearance, and I’m usually all for that. In fact, I really hope he makes a comeback during Secret Invasion. If anyone can outwit the Skrulls, it is that man. Garth Ennis continues to be my favorite comic writer right now.
I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous leading up to this issue of DMZ. The last few issues have all been single issue character pieces, and I haven’t been impressed by most of them. I was really excited to see a new arc start, but the recent stuff had left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I was not excited for more of the same. Brian Wood finally pulled it together again, and I’m really pumped about this title. All of the arcs he’s written have been fantastic up to this point, and this is no different. As Ennis did with the Punisher this week, so had Brian Wood done with DMZ, minus Nick Fury. Having a 4 week cease-fire in the DMZ could really help move things along diplomatically. We’ve all seen situations like that however, and they almost always end up in more bloodshed. Will Parco Delgado turn into the political figure the DMZ needs in order to unite and become a functioning entity again? I’m excited.
