Time for your close-up.

Newcastle Up Close. WAY Close.

Ever wondered what your beer looks like up close? I mean, REALLY close?

Well look no further than Molecular Expressions’ Beershots Photo Gallery. What they do is put different beers under a microscope under different conditions, and take pictures of what they see.

It looks like a damn complicated process, but the end results are pretty cool.

As they put it:

Beer is a complex and heterogeneous mixture that contains a wide variety of both low and high molecular weight carbohydrates, minerals, alcohol, trace amounts of proteins, yeast by-products, and other diverse organic compounds along with carbon dioxide in an approximately 10 percent weight to volume mixture with water.

What you’re looking at above is a photo Newcastle, or as a British friend of mine would put it “Newgie Brown”.

They have a pretty good selection of beers from around the world. Check it out.

  1. I do believe I saw this before, but I’m glad you brought it to my attention again. Quite a wonderful thing. Although I’d be a bit more interested to see something like Bittersweet Lenny. Very Cool.
