Founder’s Devil Dancer

Devil DancerSo while I’m fighting of a wicked cold, I figured a beer would be in order. I figure that if I’m going to be congested, I may as well enjoy at least part of my day.

So I opened up the fridge, and it was between the Founder’s Devil Dancer and a Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout. I’ve had the Kalamazoo Stout plenty of times. As a matter of fact, it might be the best stout in the state of Michigan. An old standby to be sure. But that’s for another time.

I opened up the Devil Dancer and poured it into a pint glass. Immediately I was a little disappointed in the almost complete lack of head, but that hasn’t stopped me before.

I’m just going to cut straight to it. I’m going to have to say something that I don’t think I’ve ever said before. There is such a thing as too many hops.

Seriously. I love hops. They’re my favorite part of beer. But this triple IPA takes it too far.

This is more bitter than it needs to be. The aroma is nice, but it could use a little more maltiness. Maybe the 13% alcohol is hurting - if it wasn’t so boozy it might be a little easier on the palate, even with all the hops. All in all, I’m kind of disappointed. Their Breakfast Stout, Rubaeus, and Red’s Rye are all excellent; beers I really look forward to drinking.

Maybe I’m just getting old, but Devil Dancer seems only good for ruining my palate. Sometimes extreme beer is just too extreme. 2/10

  1. LIES!

    This is DELICIOUS!

Granted, i haven’t had it yet this year, but its always left me wanting more of it in the past.

As soon as this whole not drinking beer for Lent thing is over, i’m getting me one of these!

  2. Hoppy amazement and malty goodness! The alcohol was hidden coompletely by the wonderful enormity of this ale.

I think Ian got a decimal wrong on his rating, this is more like a 2/1!
